Linda smiled at Rachel understandingly.
“I know it’s hard to accept, when you are as young and full of life as you are, dear,” she said. “But believe me, we old people know when our bodies start failing and torturing us with pains and aches. Many have no option of ending the misery on their terms. I’m glad we have this option here.”
“How old are you, Linda, if you don’t mind me asking?”
“Not at all. I just turned 75 last month.”
“But you don’t look older than 60!” Rachel said, shocked. “Have you cracked the longevity code here or something? No one looks older than 60-65!”
“Ah, that’s what happens when you do take care of your body and mind and don’t have to think about uncertainties of death. When that huge anxiety about dying is removed, you can live a truly healthy, happy, and purposeful life. It makes you feel and look younger, too.”
“Hmm, I guess that makes sense. But… how do you know when it’s your time…?”
“To go through completion?” Linda helped Rachel, struggling for words.
“Yes, completion.”
“Oh, we have tests for that. Believe me, we know after we take them.” Linda said.

Life will find a way
One cocoon twitches; my screaming must have disturbed it. It’s followed by a sound like the shaking of a cobra’s tail. A dry rattle sends a shiver down my spine. The rest of the cocoons respond the same way, as if communicating with one another; the cave fills with rattling. The glow becomes stronger as they vibrate and bathes the cave floor in an eerie blue light.
