The In-Between

Chapter 9: No More Hiding

By AmberPublished about 18 hours ago 4 min read

The house held its breath.

Every board, every shadow, every darkened corner seemed to lean inward as Elias’s footsteps moved across the first floor.

Slow.

Deliberate.

He wasn’t searching.

He knew exactly where she was.

“Lex?”

His voice floated up the staircase like smoke.

Warm.

Soft.

The same voice that had once whispered through locked doors and dark hallways.

Alex stood frozen in the bedroom doorway, every nerve screaming.

But something inside her had changed.

The terror was still there.

It always would be.

But it was no longer alone.

Vivian stood like iron inside her.

June trembled but did not disappear.

And Alexandra… finally… was still present.

No more missing time.

No more black spaces.

Just fear.

And fury.

Dr. Mercer stepped slightly in front of her.

“Stay behind me.”

Alex shook her head.

“No.”

The word surprised even her.

Firm.

Clear.

Certain.

Footsteps on the stairs.

One step.

Then another.

Then another.

Until Elias appeared at the top landing.

For one sickening moment, he looked exactly as memory had preserved him.

Tall.

Controlled.

The same sharp jaw.

The same careful smile.

Older now, with silver beginning at his temples.

But the eyes were unchanged.

Cold.

Possessive.

He looked at Alex as if she had never stopped belonging to him.

“There you are.”

Alex’s stomach turned.

Dr. Mercer’s voice cut through the silence.

“You need to leave.”

Elias smiled without looking at her.

“This is family business.”

His eyes never left Alex.

“Come on, Lex. Let’s not do this in front of strangers.”

Strangers.

Alex almost laughed.

Because for years, he had turned everyone else into a stranger inside her own life.

Maya stepped into view behind him.

Her curls damp from the rain.

Mascara smudged beneath her eyes.

She looked almost fragile.

Almost.

“Alex,” Maya said softly, “please just listen.”

Alex stared at her.

The betrayal felt heavier than fear.

“How long?”

Maya’s face tightened.

“How long have you been doing this?”

Maya looked down for a moment.

Then back up.

“Since the beginning.”

The words landed like glass.

Alex felt the room tilt.

Maya took one careful step forward.

“I was supposed to watch over you.”

Elias’s mouth curved slightly, amused.

Maya continued, voice trembling.

“He said you were unstable even back then. That you imagined things. That you made things up.”

Dr. Mercer’s face hardened.

“You helped gaslight a child.”

Maya flinched.

“It wasn’t like that.”

Alex’s voice came out low and deadly.

“Then what was it like?”

Maya’s eyes filled.

“I loved him.”

Silence.

Heavy.

Rotting.

Elias looked annoyed now, as if confession bored him.

Maya swallowed.

“He told me you were dangerous. That you hurt your sisters. That you blacked out and became violent.”

Alex stared.

No.

He had built the narrative from childhood.

He had been planting it for decades.

Maya continued, tears spilling now.

“I believed him.”

Elias finally spoke.

“She was useful.”

Maya went still.

Her head turned slowly toward him.

A flicker of pain crossed her face.

He hadn’t denied it.

Hadn’t said he loved her.

Hadn’t even pretended.

Just useful.

Alex saw the moment something cracked inside Maya.

Years of obsession colliding with reality.

“You said…” Maya whispered.

Elias sighed.

“Oh, don’t start.”

The cruelty in his tone was almost casual.

He looked back at Alex.

“This was never about her.”

A pause.

“It was always about you.”

The room went cold.

Dr. Mercer’s hand brushed Alex’s arm.

A grounding touch.

Elias stepped closer.

“I gave you every chance to stay quiet.”

Alex’s voice shook.

“You terrorized me.”

His smile sharpened.

“I preserved the truth.”

Something in Vivian surged.

No. He rewrote it.

Alex straightened.

Her voice steadied.

“You abused me.”

For the first time, Elias’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

A fracture in the mask.

Then contempt.

“You survived because of me.”

June cried out inside her.

Liar.

The word tore through Alex like lightning.

A memory slammed into place.

Complete.

Elias pinning her against the hallway wall.

His hand over her mouth.

Her mother turning the corner…

Seeing.

Pausing.

Walking away.

Alex gasped.

“Oh my God.”

Dr. Mercer turned toward her.

“What did you remember?”

Alex’s voice cracked.

“She knew.”

The entire room went still.

“My mother knew.”

Elias’s face darkened.

“Don’t.”

But now the floodgates were open.

“She saw him,” Alex whispered, tears streaming. “She saw what he was doing.”

Maya stared between them.

Elias’s voice dropped dangerously.

“Enough.”

But Alex stepped forward.

No longer hiding.

No longer shrinking.

“You told everyone I was crazy because if I ever remembered the truth, it would destroy you.”

Elias’s jaw tightened.

“People like you always need a villain.”

Alex laughed bitterly.

“No.”

She held his gaze.

“People like you always need a victim.”

Something snapped in his face then.

The charm vanished.

The softness disappeared.

Only rage remained.

He lunged.

Dr. Mercer shoved Alex sideways just as Elias slammed into her shoulder.

They crashed into the hallway wall.

Maya screamed.

Alex hit the floor hard.

Pain shot through her ribs.

But Vivian was there.

Cold.

Focused.

Get up.

Alex rose.

Elias had Dr. Mercer pinned against the wall, forearm pressed to her throat.

Maya stood frozen in horror.

“Elias, stop!”

He didn’t even look at her.

Alex’s eyes darted across the hallway.

Then landed on the old brass lamp still sitting on the upstairs table.

The same table that had once held family photos.

She grabbed it.

Heavy.

Solid.

Vivian’s voice cut clear as steel.

Now.

Alex swung.

The lamp struck Elias across the side of the head.

A sickening crack.

He staggered backward.

Dr. Mercer dropped to the floor, gasping.

Elias touched the blood at his temple.

Then slowly looked at Alex.

And smiled.

A terrible, broken smile.

“There she is.”

Alex’s hands shook around the lamp.

“No.”

Her voice was steady now.

“There I am.”

Downstairs, sirens wailed in the distance.

Closer.

Growing louder.

Maya looked toward the window.

Her face drained.

“I called them.”

Elias’s eyes snapped to her.

Shock.

Then fury.

“You stupid…”

Maya backed away.

“I didn’t know… I didn’t know what he really…”

Alex stared at her.

Part of her wanted to hate Maya forever.

Another part knew Maya had also been manipulated.

Not innocent.

But not untouched.

The sirens stopped outside.

Blue and red lights bled through the cracked window.

Elias’s expression changed instantly.

Calculation.

Exit.

He bolted down the stairs.

Alex moved instinctively after him.

Vivian surged.

End this.
