Icarus
Pride before the Fall

Mankind is Icarus and our own pride is the wind that deafened him as he flew, drowning out any other thoughts or sensibilities
We too, as a whole, are on our flight upward reaching for the sun
There are some who would be Daedalus, warning us of the dangers of our actions, advising us since long ago the predetermined outcome of this current path
And we feigned acknowledgement and understanding, "Yes I hear you and I will take steps to avoid that outcome don't you worry."
Whether we believed our own words or not does not matter because we are already in the sky arcing upwards.
We refuse to take advice or learn lessons, we reach ever higher, the pride/wind roaring in our ears, rattling our brains until we hear only one thought screamed almost as a command. "WE. KNOW. BEST."
No matter how many times that has been proven false in the past or how many warnings are given by the Daedalus among us.
We will reach into that beautiful, open, and cruel sky
We will build Artificial Intelligence to do our thinking for us
We will harm our kin for looking or speaking different
We will expand corporations until the same beautiful sky we currently sail toward turns as black as the ocean bottom we will soon find ourselves sinking toward
And because we can we will never stop to ask ourselves if we should.
Not at least until we feel the wax, melting, burning our shoulders and backs
And we will fall, cursing Daedalus the entire way down because he should've told us
He should've told us the wax would hurt so much
