The Unnecessary Line

I heard the wind's swish

a song through hard times

it had no words

just the buzz and swell of the unsteady

at times like this, I’m scared to go out

when it rains, the air hums

the kind of hum you’ll never forget

if you’ve ever been here

digging deep holes in my brain

like on an oil rig

drilling in my skull

Don't hold my hand if you're just going to let go.

extracting all manner of minerals

delivering them to the core

like an eternal, undersea spring

keeping me alive with its umbilical cord

once found and released

it flows on its own

floating on countless words

transformed

in the sweep

of a dancer's flared skirt

swirls and serpentines find their own paths

just as my sorrows do when I write them down
