John Major Condemns the Iran War.

Illegal, Aimless, and Rudderless War.

Ex-British PM: John Major.

I can't say I've cared for many Conservative prime ministers. Most, if not all, Tory leaders have been enemies of the working class, despite the ethos of one-nation Conservatism. Look at the last shower of Tory leaders we have had before Sir Keir Starmer took the keys of No 10. However, I actually didn't mind John Major, who became prime minister after the fall of Margaret Thatcher. Unlike many Tories, John Major was not from the Oxbridge set. Sir John Major was born in Brixton and came from a fairly ordinary background. He worked his way to the top and replaced Thatcher. Major and his wife seemed like they could have lived next door to you. Nothing controversial about them or scandalous. The most you could say about the Majors is that they were dull and boring. But compared to the last 5 Conservative prime ministers, we have had, starting with David Cameron and ending with Rishi Sunak, I'd rather have had dull and boring.

John Major, from time to time, since he retired from being PM and as an MP, has waxed lyrical about governments, whether Conservative or Labour, on subjects the government of the day were doing or saying. Sir John has often spoken out on issues affecting ordinary people or the country in general.

Speaking in London at a gathering to honour Labour Prime Minister Clement Atlee, Major attacked Trump for launching the war on Iran. Major said that when the bombs stop falling, anger would be deferred. Old wounds would continue to fester, and new ones would open up. Major denounced the war as aimless, saying Trump's narrative for starting the conflict varied from day to day. Firstly, it was the liberation of the Iranian people from their Islamic oppressors. Then it was eliminating the threat of Iran's nuclear industry that could result in atomic bombs, and then it was Iran's ballistic missiles.

Major said that Trump should have sought the backing of the United Nations if he wanted to start a war with Iran. So, at least he could gain legality even if his methods for starting the war are questionable. Major said no nation was ever consulted about the war except Israel.

Sir John also took swipes at Vice President J D Vance and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth. Sir John said, "Many nations will pay the price" (for this war). And that is happening now in various ways, and however this war ends, there will be repercussions for years to come. Look at previous wars. Iraq, after being torn apart by war in which the US, UK, and other Western nations are largely responsible, is just about pulling itself back together as a nation. Libya remains a failed state after Western intervention. We spent 20 years in Afghanistan, and we pulled out, leaving the Taliban to take control again. Now we have another white-hot war that suits the aims of Israel and its bunch of far-right messianic nutters. The US is putting its men and women in the military in harm's way. And for what? So the Jewish state can be the dominant power and establish "Lebensraum" to create a Greater Israel.

Major said there is "No exit strategy and the president asked for surrender (from Iran). He is unlikely to get it". If anything, despite the heavy loss of life and infrastructure, Iran has shown resilience. It has hit back, and I don't think Trump was ready for that. I think at one point, Trump couldn't understand why Iran hadn't thrown in the towel. Trump thought the war would be wrapped up quickly, but it has turned into a dragged-out mess.

Sir John also described Sir Keir as "tiptoeing" around Trump. Major said Sir Keir should have stood up to Trump and not been afraid of upsetting him. To a certain extent, the UK has been reluctant to join Trump's crusade against the Islamic Republic of Iran. Britain, in the beginning, denied the US the use of its air bases, but now US planes fly out of these bases to deliver mayhem in Iran. UK Typhoon fighters now patrol the Middle East, intercepting Iranian drones and missiles. HMS Dragon, a British warship, is steaming its way to Cyprus after a British military base was hit by a drone launched by Iran or its ally Hezbollah. Sir Keir even said, "We do not achieve regime change from the air". Sir Keir is correct to say that, because no war has ever been won by air power alone.

Sir John knows what it is like to face a war, as he joined George Bush I in getting Iraq under Saddam out of Kuwait in the 1990-91 Gulf War. But that war had clear goals, and Bush and Major were clear on what was to be done. As opposed to Trump, who clearly has no idea what to do and whose rants change like the wind.
