I Stopped Waiting for Inspiration
This is What Happened
I used to only write when I was inspired. This does not bode well for a wife and mother trying to make time to be inspired. Now, I am working on staying in the habit of writing every day, and I can feel the shift physically inside of me.
I made myself a deal to write something every day for 365 days. Some days, that's a story; sometimes, a poem; and sometimes, just my real, unfiltered thoughts.
The point is that I am writing again. I am not using AI, and I am not asking story prompt generators. I am writing whatever comes to mind.
Sometimes that works out well, and sometimes it does not. I am feeling more creative.
I feel more open to stories coming to me. I am more apt to write ideas down on paper. I am taking in more long-form content and less doom scrolling.
Write on Medium
The freedom that I felt when I was writing as a child and a teen is returning to me.
When I stopped waiting for the inspiration to find me, things changed.
I started noticing people around me and how a character like them would act in the stories that I write.
I started noticing landscapes, smells, and writing down my dreams.
When you are open to inspiration, you find it everywhere.
When you stop doomscrolling and allow yourself to be drowned by quick hits of dopamine, your mind opens up in incredible ways.
I stopped waiting for inspiration, and now inspiration never makes me wait.
