The best music movies throughout history.

X2-2003
In 2000, the consensus was that the first X-Men film, while interesting, was somewhat inadequate; that Brian Singer, a prodigy among the usual suspects, was uncomfortable working in the high-salary arena. Roger Ebert was impressed with how Singer was able to handle so many characters in the film but felt that "the plot didn't live up to its potential". But there's no doubt that X2 is a marked improvement over X-Men, which belongs in that noble category of better-than-one-movie sequels. X2 is a challenging film, but still good for what it is and for its time.

A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica (1991)
I once, around the Good Year 1989, played the opening riffs off of "Blackened" by Metallica, from an audio cassette (i.e. music recorded on magnetic tape unspooled between two plastic spinners, in a machine specifically designed to do so, called a "tape deck") of their fourth album ....And Justice for All. An aunt of mine, who was into the average arena-rock bands of the era, the Poisons, and Motley Crues, recoiled in horror. "That band SUCKS!" she exclaimed. "They'll never amount to anything!" That was her prediction. Of course, they went on to mega-stardom, success beyond their wildest dreams, becoming one of the top bestselling hard rock/heavy metal bands in recording industry history.

The Debussy Film
The life of Claude Debussy, the French composer, is explored in this very unique production of an early Ken Russell, whose visual flair and penchant for outrageousness became the cinematic hallmark of this creative artist. I know very little about Claude Debussy (portrayed here as both an actor playing Debussy, as well as the man himself, by the late Oliver Reed), except that he was French, refused to do much in the way of employment, and had affairs with desperate, despairing. and unstable women who had a penchant for suicide attempts. The narration, told by the French director of the "film within the film" that is this film, is sometimes hard to follow. There is the narrative of a crew making a film in the middle Sixties (replete with rock n; roll parties and go-go dancing), and then the film itself, and then the focus on the life of Debussy, the contemplative genius of a man obsessed with sculpture and high art, and using these vast intellectual tendrils to find his creative fire, to develop his weltanschauung. Finally, there seem to be the burnt, bitter relationships he left in his wake.

'Xanadu' - Olivia Newton-John's Underappreciated Bit of Magic
Hi, and welcome back to Second Chances where the maligned, forgotten, and ignored inspire me to honor a music icon. Okay, I have been teasing that I would one day cover the 1980 disco musical Xanadu ever since I wrote my piece about Razzie picks worth watching four years ago. With how busy my life is between two jobs and multiple side projects, it kept getting pushed off over and over again. However, with the recent passing of the film's star, the wonderful Olivia Newton-John, I decided that I just had to hunker down and finally do it, especially since all of the tributes to her only seem to focus on Grease and her pop songs. Xanadu may be a polarizing film that (along with Can't Stop The Music) created the Razzies in the first place, but I can't help but enjoy it.

Morricone, wide as the sea
Giuseppe Tornatore photographed Ennio Morricone with the reverence of a well-cared for junior for his grandmaster. "Ennio: The Maestro," a 150-minute documentary, features tornatore's lengthy interviews with Morricone and film clips, interspersed with people's memories and opinions about him. The editing is good, with multiple conversations tied into tight dialogues by invisible ropes, and The humming of Morricone and the directors morphing into old movie scenes. The last half-hour was a dog's tail, with Oscar's recognition of the aged Morricone's lifetime achievement and Quentin Tarantino's rave praise for him (more than Mozart or Beethoven) having the air of a final verdict. Anyone who has watched several of Morricone's 500 films, or watched the first two hours of the documentary, will agree that the last half hour is superfluous. And while recognition brings joy to the master, and perhaps tears, no more than he does when he's composing, or even when he's exercising slowly at the beginning of the film.
