I received a call from my mother to hear my Aunt Mary has passed away suddenly. I hardly knew Mary; she lived in Yorkshire most of her later years, and I only visited her a couple of times growing up. She was well... eccentric to say the least. My mother never kept in touch with her properly after an incident happened in a church that Mary was a member, I didn’t ever push for details but it left her startled. A day later, a letter came through regarding the inheritance that needed sorting. The letter read as follows:

The Cuallacht of Destryn
I can hear their snarling and barking as I push myself to go faster. I can barely breathe. Branches snap under my feet as I race through the forest, fleeing the pack of wild dogs growing closer and closer. I hear thunder crash overhead, and I wonder if it truly is rumbling thunder or the blood pulsing in my ears. I’m lost now, jumping over fallen trees and ducking under low branches, and just as I feel there will be no way out of here, I find myself in a clearing. I barely register the yellowing grass in a semicircle around the cathedral or the faded white crosses and cracked grey stones around it. All I know is there are hounds at my heels, a storm blowing in, and I need to find shelter immediately. Without thinking, I throw myself against the large, hand-carved doors. Thankfully they open with little resistance, and I stumble inside with the doors thudding shut behind me. I lean back against them with all my strength, gasping for breath as the dogs try to claw their way in. The argument with my father earlier today takes over my thoughts.

The Black Book
My heels clicked on the linoleum floor as I made my way to my office. My employees greeted me with respect as I went. I stepped into my office making sure to lock the door behind me. After what the book put me through last month I would hate for anyone to see what's in it.

The end is the Beginning
The end is the beginning of a circular story. And for that I am sorry. That was all she read in the little black b0ok that caught her eye at the thrift store before she tucked it in the crook of her elbow and carried on. She needed a blouse for a job interview on Wednesday morning so she continued browsing until she thought she had one that might fit.

The keeper of worlds
The wrought iron gates scraped against Eloise's teeth as she wedged them open enough to slip through, ripping her way through the tangle of creeper vines. The moon cast shadows through the twisted, gnarly fig trees looming overhead. Frogs croaked, and cicadas sounded in the woodlands around her. Her ears pricked, listening for anything that shouldn't be.

Maybe
I always loved going to thrift stores, auctions and estate sales. Rummaging through other people's old and discarded belongings fascinated me. I'm not sure why, but it did. Every now and then I would stumble upon something worth taking home and calling my own. That was the fun part. Maybe that's why it fascinated me. Maybe.

A Dragon in Disguise
Amara stood outside The Boastful Roast coffee shop, her mother’s journal clenched to her chest, wondering whether she could ever again have the courage to be genuine in a room of cheerful faces and warm embraces. She knew it was a mirage, but the entire world seemed to have lost its luster now that her mother wasn’t part of it. Her bank called. The rep inquired as to why her account had suddenly grown by one hundred thousand dollars. Amara heard the hint of suspicion in his voice, but she just couldn’t bring herself to say the words “My mother died” out loud. So she hung up on him. She exhaled and shouldered the coffee shop’s thick wood door. A cow bell announced her entry. She hurried through the doorway as a brisk New England cold chased her through the doorway and kissed her exposed neck. She tucked the notebook underneath her arm and used her free hand to grab her wallet out of her pocket. She stepped up to the counter and took a deep breath, savoring the distinct aroma of chocolate-infused coffee beans.

The Wishing Book
The smell of rain and dirt quickly saturated the way home. The rubbery bottoms of my Converses were starting to slip off the slick thin metal of my bike peddles. I can’t remember which way I needed to go. Was it take a left past the maple or before it? I hate first days of school! I couldn’t have just asked for a ride home from that dude who offered? He and I knew it was going to rain. Whatever, I know it’s somewhere up these hills. Maybe I can take a short-cut.

The Curse of the Wicked Wizard
Beginning As I was cleaning the basement of my family’s inheritance home that is now in foreclosure, I noticed there was a box labeled DO NOT TOUCH! I took the top off the box and I could not believe what I discovered newspaper articles, magazine clippings, and a little black book with $20,000.00 in it! I was flabbergasted and could not believe what I was seeing. I did not know if I was more shocked about the money or the way my grandfather died!
