Matcha, What's The Big Deal?
It's not just a craze, it's an evolution of the caffeine world!
I know, I know you've heard it before, but I'm that matcha girly, who is obsessed with matcha. My order at Cafe Nero is always an iced strawberry vanilla matcha and extra buttery croissants. Of course the croissants are not from Cafe Nero because they are not the best (it's my opinion), yours may be different.
Now I've thought long and hard about what I love about the whole matcha craze, and one thing's for sure: I love matcha more than any organic herbal tea. Although I do love a good chamomile tea once in a blue moon.
It’s Not Just a Drink
But matcha? Matcha is on a whole different vibe... the whole experience. It's really not a drink I go to when I'm thirsty or because I want to feel 'healthy.' No, honey! It's a ritual in those after work 'I'm tired' days when you slump in your seat in an overcrowded train. This pale green drink holds a special place in my heart. It's like when summer is coming after a long winter, at least 10% of my life feels better with it.
I think part of the reason why I love it so much is that it's intentional and feels like a long lost friend who's waiting to meet you. I've kind of romanticised matcha alittle bit too much I think.
And don’t even get me started on the taste, because I know that’s where people get divided. I know it's bitter, but so is the coffee you drink on a morning, so get yo facts right sis. Some people try it once, pull a face, and never go back, that was my sister. But honestly, I get it. It’s earthy, it’s grassy, it’s not your typical sweet, easy, vanilla latte moment. But that’s exactly why I love it. It’s not trying too hard. It’s not overly sugary or pretending to be something it’s not. It’s just… matcha. Beautiful green matcha.
A Little Sweetness Never Hurt
That being said, I will always defend a good flavoured matcha, now don't attack me please. Strawberry, vanilla, even a little hint of coconut if I’m feeling exotic. I’m not out here trying to prove anything by drinking straight ceremonial-grade matcha every day like I’m in some aesthetic morning routine video, which actually I am a vlogger. I like balance. I like a little sweetness. Life is hard enough.
Also, can we talk about the aesthetic for a second? Because yes, it matters. I don’t care what anyone says. The colour alone is enough to keep me hooked and those fickle ice cubes, damn. That soft, pastel green just does something to me. It’s calming without being boring, pretty without trying too hard. And when it’s layered with strawberry puree at the bottom? Lush. I mean… it’s basically a personality trait at this point and I could talk about it all day.
Reality vs Pinterest
But beyond the looks, because let's be real, that's not so important, there’s something comforting about the routine of it all. Whether I’m grabbing one on the go or trying to buy some high end matcha, which, if you do have any recommendations, please leave them in the comments, preferably from the UK though. I'd like that very much. The no rushing, no overthinking, just me and my slightly overpriced drink, whch I would pay for, so don't judge me!
Making it at home, though? That’s a whole different story. I’ve gone through phases where I’m convinced I’m going to become one of those people who whisk their matcha in a cute bowl with a bamboo whisk, sunlight pouring through the window, everything calm and perfect. Reality check: I’m usually half-awake, trying to find which mug to put my teabag in (if I can decide which mug that is). And you know what? My tea still tastes good, try tetley's they are a bunch of wonderful people ;)
It Became My Thing
I didn’t realise when I first started ordering matcha that it would become my thing. Not in a dramatic, life-changing way, but in that everyday habit kind of way. The kind that sneaks into your routine and suddenly feels a bit like you. It's part of my personality now.
It’s weirdly comforting knowing that no matter how chaotic things get, personal or at work, I’ll still find time for that one drink I actually enjoy. Not because it’s trending or aesthetic (even though… it is), but because it genuinely makes my day a little better and the vibe that kicks in... please get me a matcha already.
In a world where everything feels like it’s constantly changing and evolving, this simple drink is pleasing to my vibe and my life.
And yes, I will continue to order my iced strawberry vanilla matcha like it’s part of my personality. I will continue to pair it with croissants that I fully believe should be sourced everywhere, in every city of every part of the world, even at sea if need be. And I will continue to defend matcha in every debate, even when people say it tastes like grass. This grass is golden.
But it’s my grass. Follow for more whimsical blog posts, until then, let's spread the matcha looove!
